No Real Class

Letter to the Editor – Bill Hamm

One of the great features of America has been no real class.  I remember working with Sushail Jain at Davis-Besse.  He came to the US because he could not advance in India.  However, he could in the US and then go back to India at a higher class/caste.

When I was in Brussels, I asked chocolate shop keeper what she thought of Americans.  She said she loved them because they would talk to her.  She wasn’t in a lower class to them.

A legal immigrant told me he came to America because he saw no racism in the US, but saw an opportunity to work hard, succeed, and join the middle class or ever the wealthy.

In America, the wealth of very rich families is usually lost within three generations.  People are always in flux becoming more or less wealthy.  We have no class of rich that stays rich while keeping others poor.  I like the fact that everyone has a chance to succeed.  However, certain people want to transform America so that mixing of wealth no longer happens and they can stay wealthy and powerful.
