As it is constituted, Wokeism transfers the power imbued in the US citizen electorate to the keyboards of left leaning Big Tech, Fake News media and boardrooms of much of America mega corporations.
When companies use their market power to make moral rules, they effectively prevent those other citizens from having the same say in our democracy.
So corporations embraced wokeness to give themselves cover from the financial crisis and to direct anger toward white men instead of capitalism.
Wokenomics is crony capitalism 2.0, and here’s how it works: big business uses progressive- friendly values to deflect attention from its own monolithic pursuit of profit and power.
By turning wokeness into the default ideology of business, they offered to make it the default everywhere. In exchange, corporations got to wear the protective cloak of wokeness’s moral superiority.
In sum, here’s how the game works. First, Black Lives Matter activists—or environmentalists or feminists or whoever—become the front for American technology companies to win consumer trust. Second, those companies monetize that trust by generating clicks, selling ads, and charging fees—generating a treasure trove of sensitive personalized data about each of their consumers. Third, the CCP demands access to that data as a condition of entry for companies to do business in China. Fourth, these companies supplicate to the CCP and make a killing in China. Fifth, they keep mum about their dealings in China while continuing to issue woke proclamations through their corporate megaphones. BLM wins. Silicon Valley wins. The CCP wins. The real losers of this game are the American people.
The deeper problem arises when the CCP flexes its muscle as a gatekeeper to the Chinese market to then convince corporations to spread the CCP’s own values abroad.
The artificial connection of wokeness is death for our democracy. The wedding of wokeness to capitalism offers a tempting, individually rational choice that harms the nation as a whole by handing corporations social and political power.
Companies like Facebook and Google have effectively assumed the role of the state itself and have further expanded that role to regulating and censoring public opinions in ways that no governmental actor can.
But the Woke corporations are not the ultimate puppet masters in this story…It’s the shadowy dictators like Xi Jinping and MBS and others who control vast investment sums in corporations in The US and elsewhere. Witness China’s “influence” over Hollywood movie content, the NBA, and even Big Tech darling Elon Musk has the CCP hands deep into his pockets…Or how Airbnb wasn’t transparent with its users about the data that it regularly shares with the CCP. These players they pull the ultimate strings.
